Status: v0.10 Beta — Audit Hardening + Release Tooling

This page is the guide's transparency layer. Every technical statement in the guide falls into one of four buckets, and this page says which: verified claims (backed by a named public source), engineering heuristics (deliberate judgment, not specification), example-only values (teaching aids, never design authority), and an explicit needs-source-before-v1.0 backlog.

This guide is an educational engineering reference. Always verify ratings, qualifications, tooling, and environmental limits against current datasheets, governing standards, qualified-products listings, and program/customer requirements.

Release history lives in the repository CHANGELOG.md. v0.7 added source hierarchy guidance, evidence fields in templates, tighter sealed-automotive language, system-level rating warnings, shield-termination nuance, and RF/fiber decision fields. v0.8 split the site into hobby and professional tracks.

Hobby connector source status

The Hobby Connector Field Guide (introduced v0.8, expanded v0.9) is site-only material with no Source/ counterpart. Its per-topic source status — what is verified, what is example-only, and what still needs a source — is tracked in exactly one place: Hobby Source Notes, the authoritative tracker for that entire track. This dashboard intentionally carries no per-topic hobby detail; if a hobby claim's status matters to you, that page is the record.

Source hierarchy

When two sources disagree — or when deciding what counts as design authority — work down this order (also on Reading Datasheets §6.1):

  1. Program / customer / contract requirement
  2. Governing standard, current edition (record the edition/date checked)
  3. QPD/QPL listing, where qualification matters (exact manufacturer, part number, slash sheet)
  4. Manufacturer documentation (datasheet, drawing, application spec, installation instruction — at a recorded revision)
  5. Distributor pages — availability, pricing, lead time, packaging, and lifecycle hints only

Distributor pages are useful for discovery, pricing, lead time, packaging, and availability. They are not design authority for ratings, qualification, tooling, sealing, mating cycles, or safety limits. For engineering release, verify against the governing requirement, current standard, QPD/QPL listing where applicable, and the exact manufacturer documentation. Citations below that are distributor-hosted copies of manufacturer/DLA documents are noted as such; citations that are distributor listings are flagged for replacement in the backlog.

1. Verified claims

Statements backed by a credible public source. "Verified" means the claim matches the cited source as of the date checked — it does not mean the value applies to your exact part number, and sources get revised. Inline citations live in each page's Sources section.

2. Engineering heuristics

Deliberate engineering judgment — orientation, not specification. These are intentionally not sourced to a standard, because they are how experienced engineers work, not what a document mandates:

  • Do not choose by pin count first. Classify the interface (boundary, environment, service model) before shopping. (§1, §4)
  • Connector selection is system design. A connector is a controlled interface between subsystems, not "a plug with enough pins." (§1)
  • The connector is not just the shell. Contacts, backshells, seals, cavity plugs, caps, strain relief, tooling, and drawings are all part of the interface. (§5, What People Forget)
  • Exact datasheets and program requirements beat family expectations. Family-level values orient your search; the released design uses the exact part's numbers. (throughout)
  • Spare positions "where feasible and justified" — not a fixed percentage; shell size, weight, sealing plugs, and program rules may override. (§4)
  • Conservative current-derating margin below the manufacturer curve — not a fixed percentage. (§4, §10)
  • Service life with margin below rated mating cycles — not a fixed multiplier. (§3, §6)
  • Threaded/self-locking coupling is often preferred for severe vibration — judgment; bayonet is not categorically rejected where qualified. (§4, 26482 page)
  • 38999 Series III as the often-default for new harsh-environment designs — conditioned on size, mating speed, legacy, customer, and program requirements. (§7.2)
  • Bench-to-product transition rule of thumb — a judgment checklist, not a spec. (§12.3)
  • Splitting power and signal connectors vs. one mixed connector — a trade, argued per design. (Selection Packet example)
  • Shield-termination strategy — system- and frequency-dependent judgment: one-end vs. both-ends vs. 360° backshell is documented per design with an EMC rationale, never applied as a universal rule. (§5.7, templates)
  • Ratings as screening values — catalog/family figures screen candidates; the exact datasheet, derating curve, application spec, and program requirement set release values. (§3, §6, appendix, matrix)

3. Example-only values

Example values are not design ratings

Example values are included to teach selection logic. They are not design ratings. Verify exact values against the current manufacturer datasheet, application specification, governing standard, and program/customer requirement.

The following are always example-only, even where the family figure is verified above:

  • Every number in the comparison matrix and the quick-reference tables (A1–A4) — representative family figures, never part ratings.
  • The 38999 contact-size table's test currents — relative sizing aids; the derating curve controls design current. (§7.5, A2)
  • The "70–80% at full load" derating illustration in Workflow §2 — a shape illustration, not a real curve.
  • All worked-example fields marked illustrative in the cable drawing and ICD templates (part numbers, cable OD, lengths, revision letters).
  • Every placeholder (J1, P1, CONTACT-SIZE16-SKT-EXAMPLE) in the Connector Selection Packet — reasoning scaffolding, not purchasable parts.
  • Example pinouts and wire colours (e.g. the A-coded brown/white/blue/black convention) — confirm against the device datasheet.
  • Voltage/current figures quoted from standard listings (4 A / 250 V A-coded, 16 A / 630 V power codings, 600/1000 V 26482 classes) — tied to the cited edition and configuration, not universal ratings.
  • The RF and fiber minimum-decision-field tables (§2 and the RF path) — process aids listing what to capture; they assert no performance values.

4. Needs source before v1.0

The explicit backlog. These gate the v1.0 "source verified" milestone — they are the places where the guide currently relies on family-level sources, cautious wording, or no number at all, and where released-hardware use demands the exact document.

Two kinds of rows live here, and "done" means something different for each (clarified audit-2026-08): closable rows, where a better public source exists and needs to be found and cited — these can and should hit zero before v1.0 — and rows marked per-design — permanent, scoped per exact part / per assembly / per contact system, which no citation can close for your hardware. For those, the guide’s obligation is that every affected page carries the verify-the-exact-document hedge (re-verified audit-2026-08); they stay on this list as standing warnings, not unfinished work.

Source discipline (publication rules)

  • Do not reproduce paid standards tables (the body text or tables of MIL-DTL or IEC documents) in this guide or derivatives. Reference and link instead.
  • Do not copy proprietary catalog tables verbatim. Verify against public manufacturer datasheets and summarize in your own words.
  • Standards change. Record the standard identifier, edition/date checked, and manufacturer datasheet revision used for the design.
  • Manufacturer, standard, trademark, and connector-family names remain property of their owners; used here for identification and education only.
